Mindset – Carol Dweck, Ph.D.
This is a foundational read about Mindset and the differences between a Fixed versus Growth mindset.  I re read this every few years as part of my compass.

Grit – Angela Duckworth
Attitude + Action = You.  Grit is the action part of this equation and another foundational book to complement Mindset.

Extreme Ownership – Jocko Willink and Leif Babin
This is just a bad ass book!  You get firsthand Navy Seal stories and lessons from Jocko and Leif, and their message of owning it is spot on!  Listen on Audible as Jocko and Leif narrate it, and you can hear the grit in their voices.

Endurance – Alfred Lansing
Earnest Shackleton may be one of the greatest leaders in history.  To hear how he and his men survived the ice flows as their ship, The Endurance was trapped is one of the greatest stories of leadership and survival of all time.

Man’s Search for Meaning – Viktor Frankl
No words can describe this book, other than the importance of reading it.

Sapiens, A Brief History of Humankind – Yuval Noah Harari
An awesome read about the history of humans…and why, where, and when things happened… Very interesting, and a great history book that doesn’t read…like a history book.

Atomic Habits – James Clear
We all have them…good and bad.  Get into this book to purpose more towards the good…  Excellent read!

Building a Story Brand – Donald Miller
Even better was taking a Donald Miller class on writing!  This book is his template for all story telling, applicable from email to marketing to blogging to presenting, and of course storytelling.  If you write, read this…

Start with Why – Simon Sinek
Let’s face it, anything Simon Sinek is great!  Start with Why is another foundational book to keep your compass pointed north (or whatever direction you’re wanting to go)..

The Infinite Game – Simon Sinek
While on the Sinek kick, this is the next read.  Every CEO should read.  This is an infinite game, and when you play the game right, not only do you have better performance, but you have fulfillment…purpose.

Can’t Hurt Me – David Goggins
What the hell?!  This dude is crazy!  Listen on Audible as David Goggins comments throughout the book.  Truly amazing life of perseverance and let’s face it…a good dose of insanity through determination.

Shoe Dog – Phil Knight
Excellent story about one of the most notable companies ever, and how it came to be.  Just Do It!

Steve Jobs – Walter Isaacson
We all know Apple and a guy named Steve Jobs.  I read this when it first came out and learned about Steve Jobs, the human, innovator, driver, leader, and madman!  One of the ‘greatest’ men of our times – love him or hate him.

The Power of Habit, by Charles Duhigg is a great book about the importance of habits, and understanding what they are and how they work, i.e. habit loops.  It’s fascinating to deconstruct what’s happening in our brains.  I have a new found respect for checklists…

How We Got to Now – Steven Johnson
6 of the greatest innovations in human history.  I love these types of books that peel back the onion.  Very fascinating.

Scaling Up – Verne Harnish
Honestly, I could have saved the tuition from Grad School by just studying this book.  Critical to anyone who runs a business or P&L…  Even without, the understanding of how to scale I believe is one of the most important aspects of any business, owned or managed.

The Dichotomy of Leadership – Jocko Willink and Leif Babin
Excellent sequel to Extreme Ownership.  Jocko and Leif, in the same format of Navy Seal stories to business application balance out the dichotomies of leadership.

Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics – Dan Harris
Meditation, in any form, is a trait of highly successful people.  I read this out of curiosity and desire to introduce into my life, and I can say it REALLY helped during some very stressful times.  This makes meditation obtainable…

Astrophysics for People in a Hurry – Neil deGrasse Tyson
Super nerdy and cool….  I need to read again to retain the other 90%.  I dig this book though as it is interesting and Neil deGrasse Tyson does a great job breaking this universe down for those lowly humans like me to understand….

Never Split the Difference – Chris Voss
Chris Voss is a retired FBI negotiator.  Not only are the stories cool, his negotiation tactics are real and applicable!  What do you think?

Measure What Matters – John Doerr
How do you move your objectives forward?  Measure them!  Excellent read on accountability and management tactics to get you and the team executing what matters.

Undaunted Courage – Stephen Ambrose
The Lewis and Clark story, as told from their journals and written into the story of this great American adventure!  Definitely a great Audible companion on a long drive or hike!

Dreams of El Dorado – H.W. Brands
The discovery and settlement of the West…  True American adventure.

Mountains of the Mind – Robert McFarlane
Just a beautifully written book about why we are drawn to the mountains, and to summit them with all the dangers and risk associated.  This is a book for anyone who loves the mountains, hiking, the outdoors, and just looking for a great and peaceful read.

There are so many great reads/listens that this page could go on forever!  I will keep adding more as I go.  And if you have some recommendations, please let me know!
